America’s first forest burial ground. Different from the traditional cemetery, the tree cemetery through the protection system of tree adoption, maintenance, restoration and management of large tracts of woodland as a tree burial area. Their work includes the overall planning of the site and the design of structures, spaces, slow motion systems, signage systems and habitat restoration. A tree can be designated as a family burial site, where the ashes of loved ones are scattered for generations. The idea combines a sense of ritual, remembering loved ones and preserving the forest with a simple poetic touch.
The visitors’centre is accessible along a path that integrates the entrance with the surrounding environment. Created by the design team in collaboration with the architecture firm, this beautifully shaped building stands alone on a hilltop and serves as a dividing point between public and private spaces. The observation deck and two small conference rooms at the visitors’centre provide a venue for family memorial services or meetings with forest managers. In the grass is another studio designed monument, a concrete bench engraved with the names of family members, arranged in a manner reminiscent of tree rings. In the ever-changing Forest, the visitor center conveys a sense of peaceful timelessness -- it has always been and will always be there.
